S&W 5906, 4506 and 4006 police trade-ins: what to know before you buy

We have three Smith & Wesson Third Generation police trade-ins and a Beretta 92FS on the shelf. This page helps you pick between them and check any used pistol before you pay.

Reading the S&W model number

The first two digits point to the caliber. The last digit is 6 for stainless steel and 3 for aluminum alloy. All three S&Ws above end in 6, so they have stainless frames. They are double-action/single-action pistols with a slide-mounted lever that also decocks the hammer.

Which one fits you

  • 5906 (9mm): holds 15 rounds (10-round magazines were also sold).
  • 4506 (.45 ACP): an 8-round magazine; this one includes two magazines, which helps because spares for out-of-production pistols take effort to find.
  • 4006 (.40 S&W): a .40 S&W pistol from the same family; this one is an 11-round trade-in.

A short check for any used pistol

  1. Look down the bore with a light for pitting or bulges.
  2. Check the feed ramp and slide rails for gouges and battering.
  3. Test the lever and the trigger in double action and single action, unloaded and pointed in a safe direction.
  4. Seat each magazine. It should lock in and drop free. Some of these pistols have a magazine safety, so test them with the magazine seated and unseated, unloaded.
  5. Look under the grips and inside the slide for rust.

Holster wear is normal on police guns. Judge each pistol on its own, not on its history. Read the photos and the condition notes on the product page.

How buying works

Handguns ship to a licensed dealer (FFL). You complete ATF Form 4473 and a NICS background check there. Ask your dealer if your state adds waiting periods or permits.
